What it costs

Fees and charges

What notarisation and legal documentation cost at these chambers — presented as they are actually set: notarial fees are fixed by statute, and drafting or advisory work is quoted in writing before it begins.

Notarial fees in India are not a matter of negotiation. They are prescribed under the Notaries Rules, 1956, framed under the Notaries Act, 1952, and are the same across every Notary Public appointed by the Central or a State Government. What varies from one practitioner to another is the fee for drafting, advisory work and documentation that surrounds the notarial act — not the notarial act itself.

The practical effect is that a client walking into any notary's chambers in Chennai is entitled to be charged at the prescribed rate for the notarial act performed. No fee above the prescribed rate is charged at these chambers for notarial acts, and the fee is stated before the work is done.

Prescribed fee schedule

The notarial appointment is registered under number 61470 and the current Certificate of Practice runs to 12 July 2031. Fees for notarial acts are prescribed under the Notaries Rules, 1956.

Fees payable to a Notary Public for the acts listed in Section 8 of the Notaries Act, 1952, as prescribed under the Notaries Rules, 1956 (as amended from time to time).

The fee for each notarial act is prescribed under the Notaries Rules, 1956 as amended. The current, verified schedule is being confirmed row-by-row for publication on this page. In the meantime, the applicable prescribed fee for your specific document will be confirmed before you visit — send a WhatsApp message describing what needs to be notarised.

What is not included in the notarial fee

The prescribed notarial fee is the fee for the notarial act only. The following are separate and are payable at actual cost, either directly by the client or, where advanced by the chambers, on reimbursement:

  • • Non-judicial stamp paper of the denomination required for the document.
  • • Government fees for gazette notification, newspaper publication or registration.
  • • Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Apostille or embassy attestation fees, where the document is intended for overseas use.
  • • Statutory charges levied by courts, sub-registrars or other public authorities.
  • • Courier, photocopy and printing charges where they arise.

Drafting and advisory work

Fees for drafting, documentation and advisory work depend on the nature and complexity of the matter. The fee is confirmed in writing before any work begins, so there is no surprise at the end. A rate card is not published for drafting or advisory work because the meaningful variable is the document itself — a two-page rental agreement, a shareholder arrangement, or a review of a proposed contract each take different work. A fee is quoted for your specific matter, agreed in writing, and only then is the work undertaken.

No charge for an initial enquiry

There is no charge for an initial enquiry about what your matter requires or which documents you need to bring. You are welcome to describe your matter — by phone, WhatsApp or email — and receive a clear answer on what will be required and what the fee will be before you decide to proceed.
